Coloring for Calm: A Wellness Initiative for Our Students

Help me give my students coloring posters and markers for a great mindfulness activity!

My Project

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on our students' mental health and academic well-being. As an educator in a Title 1 school, it is essential to provide not only rigorous academic instruction but also opportunities for social-emotional growth. Research demonstrates that students who receive support in these areas achieve better academically, develop stronger relationships, and enhance their workplace skills.

Coloring, a simple yet powerful activity, has been shown to reduce stress, improve mindfulness, and promote relaxation.

By focusing on the present moment, students can disconnect from negative thoughts and feelings.

To provide my students with this valuable resource, I propose creating a collaborative coloring space in our school hallway. A large, 48 x 63 inch coloring poster featuring various designs, along with double-tip colored markers and pencils, will be available during recess, lunch breaks, and during "Brain Break" in my science classes. This initiative will foster a sense of community as students from different grade levels work together on a shared project.

The benefits of coloring extend beyond stress relief. Studies have shown that this activity can be particularly effective in healthcare settings. Given the positive outcomes observed in these environments, I believe that students will also greatly benefit from this mindfulness and stress-reduction initiative.
