Colorful Therapy!

My students need a color printer in order to better participate in low-tech communication opportunities during therapy, in the classroom, and at home.

My Students

I work at a large urban school district with ELL students who have a wide variety of disabilities that affect communication, gross motor, and fine motor skills.

As a bilingual speech-language pathologist, I want to provide my wonderful students with opportunities to communicate during their therapies, in the classroom, and at home using a multi-modal approach.

For our students who are multihandicapped, this may mean providing them with the opportunity to use eye gaze on high-contrast color-specific images to make a choice. For our students on the autism spectrum, this may mean providing them with a colorful topic board on which they may explore their emotions and make comments on how different activities make them feel.

From our curious kindergartners to our motivated middle schoolers, a common need in order to facilitate successful therapy is access to high-quality low-tech communication. Every student has a right to communicate and participate in therapies that will improve their daily functioning - and my fantastic students have a lot to say!

My Project

A reliable color printer will be used daily for our students with disabilities - many of whom are ELLs - in order to increase their ability to communicate and participate in their therapies, in the classroom, and at home. The printer will be used in a shared space between myself (the bilingual SLP), two occupational therapists, two physical therapists, and a vision specialist.

Although it may seem like a small thing, the donations from this project will vastly improve the quality of therapy that our students receive.

It is essential that these students have quality treatment and as many opportunities to communicate as their non-disabled peers in order to improve overall functioning. In addition, a color printer will help facilitate improved communication between home and school by providing families with the low-tech communication techniques we implement at school.
