My Students

What is the best way to develop vocabulary skills? Add a picture to the word you are describing and you are making direct connections with the brain, bypassing language barriers.

The students in ESOL class come from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, but share the need of vocabulary development.

Students in Elementary school are learning about body parts, feelings, foods, weather, animals, and transportation. Middle school students learn about American history and government, as well as environmental issues and world history. All the units we discuss require students to have rich active vocabulary.

My Project

My goal in the ESOL class is to help the students develop vocabulary skills and build vocabulary databases. Picture dictionaries and picture cards are the tools for teaching and learning. My students enjoy playing picture card games, giving each other clues about the pictures, and taking the pictures home for studying vocabulary. I am accustomed to searching ESOL websites for vocabulary development picture cards, printing them out, laminating them, and using in class with the students. Our classroom has recently received a color printer/copier/scanner from the project funded through donorschoose. I have discovered the joy of printing colorful picture cards. The students have noticed the difference as well. Now we are in need of ink supply to keep printing the cards this year. The students in Elementary school enjoy sequencing cards and develop speaking skills by telling the events in order. The sets of sequencing cards will be a valuable addition to our resource base.

This project is important to the students because it will give me the tools to supplement their learning with colorful picture cards.

The printed cards will become the property of the students and enrich their practice at home as well. The sequence cards will help young students develop visual literacy, critical thinking, and speaking skills. Picture card sets are real treasures of language learning.
