What makes my Third graders special is their excitement for growing up. This energy pushes them into trying challenging tasks, overcoming personal challenges, and being a productive community member.
Our school is designated Title I and more than half of our students come from low-income households.
We are located in a community with a median age of 59.9 years and a median income less than the state of Oregon. 18.6% of our people live in poverty, compared to 13.2% for the Oregon. For 2017, the estimated median income for our area was $33,821. Oregon had a median income of $56,119 (census.gov).
The elementary school has around 650 students K-5th grade. There is a high rate of student turnover. Families move here to be closer to aging family or to live on the beautiful coast. Many find it difficult to find sustainable income, housing, and other supports.
Currently, there are 24 students who are 8-9 years old in my classroom. We have 2 shared assistants for the grade level. We currently have 4 third grade teachers. The classroom is inclusive of various abilities, physical, social/emotional, and academic.
My Project
We love art in our classroom. We do an art project a month that focuses on an artist and their style of art. We also incorporate art into our literacy and math lessons.
We will be building craft stick houses based in the season of Spring to learn about area.
We will use the artificial plants to decorate our homes. We will use the canvases to create art to take home before the Summer. Students will continue to use the oil pastels, tempera, and acrylic paints during our art lessons. Our paintbrushes are in serious need of replenishing. These paintbrushes will help us do that.
