This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students' brilliantly diverse and interesting backgrounds make this urban high school a lively place! Imagine seeing games and activities from many different cultures, hearing languages from around the globe, and watching the interactions of independent, strong-willed teenagers day in and day out. This is my high school, and I have yet to see a day that is not full of life!

A vibrant mix of languages, backgrounds, talents, and goals are shared in my classroom, presenting many unique learning opportunities and challenges.

Poverty and crime are very prevalent in the area; nearly every student receives free and reduced lunch and many students carry traumatic home experiences with them every day. Despite their circumstances, my students remain positive and resilient. I strive to make my classroom a place where growth and optimism towards education are encouraged, while science is taught and explored through labs, hands-on activities and teamwork. We need the tools to fully support this mission, and my students will leave chemistry with the confidence and skills to succeed in and beyond my classroom.

My Project

The best way to help my students learn science is to let them discover it for themselves. Due to a lack of supplies, we currently work in lab groups of approximately 6 students. My goal is to have students working in groups of 2 or 3, so that everyone has a more engaging lab experience. A class set of 20 thermometers would allow the students to work in smaller groups, taking control of their own learning. Thermometers have already been used for lab activities teaching the states of matter, phase changes, and heat of reactions. They can and will continue to be used across all subjects areas and topics.

Chemistry labs utilizing color-coded materials will make labs accessible for all learners, especially those who cannot read lab procedures but are eager to discover science.

With a color printer, ink, and paper we will be able to print and label materials, steps, and necessary skills in color. This will ensure all students can participate and observe laboratory phenomenon, despite a lack of skills to listen, read, or speak about it. My hope is that when all students are able to participate fully in labs, all students will succeed in and enjoy learning science!
