I am a speech-language pathologist at an elementary school in East New York, Brooklyn. A neighborhood in which research has shown around 24% of the children live in poverty. I usually service anywhere from 35-50 students in 3-K through 5th grade, who all have an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
My students tend to have one or more disabilities (cognitive and/or physical); however, they are all excited to come to their speech sessions to learn and excel.
Many of them have challenges at school and beyond, but they come to their sessions willingly because we discuss their goals, the steps necessary for success and how we, as a team, will achieve success.
My Project
This economical printer will allow me to create colorful work packets and activities. The bright colors will help increase the level of engagement of my students.
I am currently providing speech and language services to students who are in the school building and also those doing remote learning.
I encourage all of my students to access our activities using many different modalities (e.g., auditory, visual and tactile), to help them grasp and remember the information and/or skills we are working on and/or discussing. The ability to remember and apply previous lessons will help them make progress towards their academic goals.
Having a printer that prints many colorful copies in an economical way, would greatly improve the level of interaction in my sessions. The printouts we use now are always black and white. I would like to be able to make color copies at times, to help increase my students' level of interaction with the activities, and scaffold their ability to visualize things and/or places to which they have not been exposed.
Having this project funded would be an immense help to me and my students, because we (educators) are not guaranteed to receive any type of financial support for supplies, especially of this nature, from the school.
I want to provide high quality and equitable services to my students by exposing them to various topics while working on their academic goals. This printer will help me achieve that goal in a fun and efficient way. We, my students and I, will be extremely grateful for and look forward to your support.
