My students need a color printer, ink cartridges, and photo paper for research projects as well as to print pictures of students that are Bookworms (reading program).
I teach in the Library/Media Center and teach all the students in the school (K-5). I'm responsible for teaching traditional library curriculum like research skills and finding just right books as well as teaching technology skills. I created the Bookworm reading program to instill a love of reading
My students range from Kindergarten through 5th grade, which means that my students abilities and educational needs vary widely.
I have many students that are very active learners and those that have special needs. My school has a very high percentage of free and reduced lunch (98%), meaning that most of the families have incomes in the lower bracket. Most of the students live in rentals, trailers, or subsidized housing, which means that we have a highly transient population. Most of the students have not had many experiences outside of this community.
My Project
We have a printer in the Library, but it only prints in black ink. We only have one color printer in the building in the office, but students do not have access to it. With a color printer, the students would be able to print pictures in color for their classroom and Media Center projects. In addition, I would be able to print pictures of my Bookworms in color without having to rely on my administrator to do so. I hang the Bookworm of the Month pictures up on the bulletin board just outside the Library/Media Center.
Students love to see the Bookworm pictures on my bulletin board.
It also motivates those who haven't been posted to earn their spot. Currently, it takes some time to get their pictures posted since I don't have direct access to a color printer. With direct access, I could post the pictures immediately. Additionally, the students love to work on projects and will comment that they wish their pictures could be printed in color. Inspiring kids to love learning and reading is my goal!
