I am a sixth grade teacher in a low income (poverty) school, and one of the greatest needs for my students is art supplies. We do not have funds for an art teacher, so I try to do as many art activities as possible with my students. I am often frustrated, not due to the lack of ideas to use with my students, but the lack of supplies for them to use. Many of my students' guardians(most which are grandparents, foster homes, or single parent homes)lack money for essentials. I do receive state funds that equal around $10 per student for the year, but these funds I try to use to improve technology. Usually I fund art supplies from my personal finances. The materials that I am requesting are a collection of simply art supplies that can be used in hands-on activities, from simple drawing to complex sculptures. Students would be able to show their creativity, while expressing new ideas or even problems that they find difficult to deal with. Growing up in a home focused on artistic abilities, I realize how important art is in developing the inner self and self appreciation of my students. I believe that by allowing a student to express them self through art will even curb negative behaviors. In today's world creativity and thinking outside the box are critical. Art is a great way to enhance these abilities, therefor creating better members of the communities work force.
