My Students

The students at my school come from various backgrounds. We are a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch and a light supper. My students face many challenges at home. The challenges vary in nature and yet they continue to be inquisitive and push forward. Not having the necessary resources or materials to fulfill assignments or projects is one of those challenges. For some time now, our classrooms have also been facing the same challenges. Yet, despite these, my students and I don't give up and persevere.

I always try to make sure and provide my students with the best learning experiences so they can succeed throughout their career as students and essentially in their career as productive citizens.

We are a STEM magnet center. It is important to me that my students have positive learning experiences. I want to make sure that they carry these experiences throughout their lifetime. I want to make sure that I made a positive impact. My kiddos are not the only ones learning in my classroom. I also learn from them, so having the necessary materials and resources in our classroom is critical and vital!

My Project

Imagine working on a research paper, essay with images, or coding a program for your EV3 robot. Now imagine not being able to see it in color when you print it out. My classroom has a black and white printer, that often times chews the papers up. I see my students wait for their papers to come out of our printer with excitement. However, it never fails, they always comment on how their picture/image is in black and white. Sometimes they add charts or graphs that they have to go color with markers in order to determine what each section is for. When our robotics team codes their EV3 and prints out the coding, they too have to color it in because it is in black and white. It is disheartening for them. They often feel that their final draft is a rough draft and comment it doesn't look clean or "real."

Having a color multifunction printer in the classroom will motivate my students to do better at writing essays or research papers because they will feel their final copy is real, rather than a black and white rough draft that disheartens them and their efforts.

Our school doesn't have the funds to provide each classroom a color printer. I am fortunate to have a black and white printer. However, when the ink runs out, I have to buy the ink using my own money. Either I pay for ink or my students' work won't be displayed on a bulletin board because I can't print it out. I can't ask them to print at home because most don't have a printer. The ink that I asked for will motivate my students to do better in their writing assignments because now they will be "real" when printed in color.
