My Project
Our school district provides a summer program for incoming freshmen to explore the school, meet the teachers, practice new study techniques and develop social and emotional learning through activities. The 9th graders are coming from different elementary schools that they have attended for many years and now they have to learn how to interact with a new group of people and hopefully develop new friendships.
Art projects provide a safe space to showcase creative ideas and allow students to voice positive comments when working in groups.
We are looking to provide an art project using yarn instead of drawing. Everyone can use yellow yarn to create their version of a sun or use brown and green yarn to create a forest instead of students feeling pressured to draw. The cardstock provides a background while the scissors and clear glue help finish the project. For other students that may be hesitant, jumbo coloring sheets allow the students to express themselves through color with a provided picture which alleviates the pressure of coming up with an idea. The crayons and coloring pencils give options for artistry.
Snacks are always an encouragement for even the most reluctant teenager. It's difficult for a student to not attempt to color when someone has fruit snacks and Rise Krispies on hand!
