Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach English Language Arts and Ancient History to a wonderful group of special needs students in grades 6, 7 and 8. In each of my classes, my students have a wide range of disabilities which impede their ability to learn in a General Education setting. My students also come from low-income households which makes it difficult for them to have access to resources that could positively impact their academics.
Despite the enormous challenges my students face, they are still kind, hardworking and genuinely excited to come to school to learn.
Our recent return to a physical classroom has been an adjustment for students. We have a lot of catching up to do, given the difficulties of the past year.
My Project
I teach my students on the General Education curriculum, but to help students understand these lessons, I provide many different supports and scaffolds like graphic organizers, picture heavy presentations and educational games.
Even in this increasingly digital world, my students still rely heavily on printed materials to access the General Education curriculum.
I would love to reengage students by being able to offer them materials - and the chance to create their own projects - in color. Bright, beautiful colors make everything so much more magical.
