As a speech and language pathologist, I am blessed to work with so many wonderful students, each with unique needs. At my school, I am privileged to work with a group of exceptional kids in a classroom for children with multiple disabilities.
The students in our classroom for children with multiple disabilities are almost exclusively non-verbal and require color photos and color symbols to communicate even their most basic wants and needs.
My students share their emotions freely by laughing, smiling, crying, and even glaring, but beyond emotions, they require alternative means of communication to express themselves. They reach for, touch, or stare at pictures to show us what toys they want to play with, what song they want us to sing, to answer yes/no questions, or to tell us what they need. These pictures are essential for their communication and their autonomy.
There is only one color printer in our building for all 60 plus staff to use. Although I am free to use it as needed, the amount of printing that is required for communication symbols and other specialized speech resources is high.
Even though it sounds dramatic, teachers at my site have talked about how printing in color feels "boujee." Toner is so expensive that most teachers at my site reserve color printing only for rare, special occasions. Even with only rare, special occasion color printing, the color printer is frequently out of ink when I need to print communication materials. I am requesting a color printer and one set of refill toner cartridges to allow for the speech department at my site to print all the color communication symbols that our students require.
