Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 43 eager, energetic, and loving 1st graders, soon to be second graders who are enrolled in one of Delaware's dual language schools. Students alternate between taking classes one day in English and another day in Spanish throughout the week. Moving forward with the Utah Model next year where students will receive one half day of English and the other half in Spanish. 99% of the students at my school come from low income homes where 100% students receive free school lunch. Regardless of our population's struggles, our school maintains a desire and mission to create bi-literate and bilingual learners of our future.
A great number of our students are ELL students who are ecstatic to learn and become bi-literate and bilingual scholars.
Whenever presented a challenge, my students are tackling it full force giving it their all. Students encourage each other to never give up and do their best even when they feel discouraged. Our school seeks to show the potential of our student population with what they bring to our classrooms. Our jobs as teachers is to live and breath the UNIDOS (united) mission.
My Project
My classroom is full of diversity and my students are of different shades of colors. I have noticed that when the students have to color themselves or draw themselves, they become frustrated. They struggle to combine the right about of brown or tan to make sure their skin colors are shown accurately. With these art supplies, the students can color and draw themselves accurately without any further frustrations.
My students deserve the right to represent themselves through art without that extra thought about their skin being wrong.
I want my students to feel comfortable and proud of the skin that they are in. No student should struggle with this idea. I also added two sharpeners to assure that my students can maintain their art supplies in the classroom. Often times, they want to sharpen their crayons and colored pencils and our sharpener doesn't get the job done.
