Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The Art Colony in our school consists of twenty-five students ranging from second grade to sixth grade who meet after school to develop and practice art techniques.
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, in a primarily working class, inner-city neighborhood, my students do not have easy access to art classes.
Also, coming from families where parents may be working multiple jobs and struggling to meet everyday needs, my students may find that it is difficult for their parents to supply art materials needed to create the art they imagine.
My students need to be able to have exposure to quality art supplies so that they can fully express their artistic vision.
My Project
Currently, the 25 students in our school’s After School Art Colony have been practicing drawing techniques using graphite pencils. We want them to experiment with watercolor pencils to see how color impacts their drawings.
These art supplies will give them the opportunity to add the element of color as they practice different techniques for shading.
Because we are requesting watercolor pencils, the students will also have the opportunity to experiment with blending colors.
Finally, these pencils will help them transition from drawing with pencils to painting with watercolors.
Moving from black and white drawings to drawing in color will help students fully express their artistic visions.
