Color Graphs and Photos Bring Science Fair Projects To Life
My students need color printers and ink so they can print photos, charts, and graphs from their science projects in order to make quality science fair displays.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is struggling to build a science fair program for our inner-city students, but they are often dissuaded from completing projects because they do not have the resources at home to print out charts, graphs or photos of their work so as a result give up on finishing vital learning experiences.
I teach 8th grade physical science at a predominantly Latino middle school in an inner-city CA neighborhood where over 60% of the adults never finished high school and almost 40% are living below the poverty line.
These financial and demographic constraints prevent many students from participating in educational experiences that many of us take for granted.
Oftentimes, middle school is their last chance to experience academically challenging activities that could broaden their horizons and inspire them to seek out higher goals. Our school strives to give our students as many opportunities as possible to explore scientific material and develop the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives, as well as create the kinds of quality products that will be required of them in high school, college, and the workplace.
My Project
Science fair projects are a tradition in many households, from building models to carrying out experiments to constructing beautiful displays. However, many of the students in our inner-city neighborhood have never experienced science fair until reaching our middle school and are often intimidated by the prospect of completing a large-scale project.
In the past few years, our school has attempted to build a strong science fair program, but the results have been mixed. I and my colleagues have worked to help students overcome some of the hurdles, such as creating time and space after school for students to work on their projects. However, many of our students do not have computers at home to do research, and the ones that do often do not have the means to print out their charts, graphs, photos, and other aspects of their final displays. Our science department no longer has a color printer, so even our resources are lacking.
By donating to this project, you will be providing my students with the means to produce professional-looking charts, graphs and photos which will contribute to their final science fair project displays.
This will give them the confidence to complete successful projects that will not only be competition-worthy but which will make them, their parents, their teachers and their fellow students proud.
