This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are amazing, brilliant, resilient learners!

The young men and women in my classroom show up every day eager and ready to learn regardless of any adversity they have at home; and deserve to engage in their learning without the burden of worrying if they have adequate supplies.

They bring a pride and respect for their community and their school. The school is more than a place for learning for them, it is a beacon in the community. The school is the oldest high school in the city and boasts a legendary legacy of creating leaders and change activists.

My Project

In my classroom, students are encourage to take risks while learning. This learning many times is investigatory and messy which leads to deeper understanding of the math structures needed to be successful.

Interactive Math Notebooks are used to allow students the structure and flexibility to solidifying their learning in their notebooks; using color-coding, highlighting and color to emphasize learning engages visual learners.

Note-taking is a skill students need to continue to build and refine as they continue through high school and into their college and careers to be successful. Being able to teach these soft-skills of success in my classroom is as important as teaching the required math standards. Blending note-taking and mathematical learning is a way to move all learning and engagement forward.
