In art class, I love to integrate art history and culture into our art projects. Recently, we "visited" Panama to see how the Kuna indigenous people made Molas. Instead of sewing, we are using colored construction paper, construction paper crayons, markers, glue sticks, and scissors. At the same time, other students have been learning about Matisse and the way he "drawing" with scissors. The students are loving these projects but my art supplies are running out.
Your support of this donors choose project could really help replenish my art supplies so that the students can continue to explore other cultures and experiment with different art techniques.
As the art teacher for grades 1-5, over 600 students use the art supplies. Each year, I focus on different artists from a variety of countries, especially those that the students can relate to. Also, ever since Covid-19, many of these students are using scissors for the first time. Many of the art skills that I take for granted, like drawing with a ruler, tracing shapes, and cutting paper, need to be retaught. Every student, from our special education classes to our gifted groups, are benefiting from these projects.
