Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My school is rich in both culture and language. At least 54% of our students speak another language at home. To honor and support our students in their multilingual learning, we maintain fully bilingual English / Spanish classroom libraries in all of our classrooms. The means that across the school we have thousands of books both in English and Spanish living in classroom libraries. This can get messy and difficult to keep organized.
We would like to color-code our classroom libraries across the school.
We will put our Spanish books in blue bins and our English books in green bins. This matches the color-coding systems across our school district, which we know helps to visually reinforce language boundaries and clearly signal which language is being used for students.
Creating a school-wide color-coding system for books will support students to keep the classroom libraries organized because they will clearly know which colored bin the book should go in based on language. This seems so small, but it will save classroom teachers so many hours of time and frustration that would otherwise be spent sorting books that kids put away in the wrong place because their wasn't a clear signal of where the book should go. More time will be freed up for more important teacher tasks, like lesson planning and working directly with students.
