Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our Los Angeles school, students' attentions are often split by complex life challenges. To support the school's urgent push for literacy, our students require creative approaches to learning skills. Literacy is essential for my 10th and 11th graders in part because it supports their agency as they transition into their adult lives, improving communication and self-advocacy skills.
This project aims to inject high-interest materials to inspire self-motivation in students.
1. High quality books that reflect their diverse backgrounds through accessible presentation stimulate authentic engagement. Graphic novels also bridge the gap between the visual culture of social media that the kids live in with complex thought and high-level written expression and storytelling. These books have also been selected for "high-interest" subject matter that also helps to pique interest in otherwise less engaged students.
2. Like others, my classes are full of students with a variety of learning styles, needs, and talents. Many students with evident academic gifts are disillusioned or bored and thus disengaged. On the other hand, otherwise motivated students sometimes check out if they feel that the material is too difficult to parse. Many are shy or uninterested in speaking to new people. The games, tools, and art supplies I have requested are used in my classroom to facilitate everything from team-building strategies to storytelling exercise or Social Emotional Learning activities. I have observed otherwise unwilling participants in class discussions connect to their peers through a group builder featuring LEGO sets. I have also been told that the art materials in my class, which we use to create visual projects as well as meditation breaks, give them a much-needed opportunity for stress relief in their complex lives.
As a first-year teacher, these tools would open up varied opportunities to truly engage all students in a joyful learning environment.
