Twenty-three fifth graders from seven different countries are coming together to time travel to the American past. Their task: discover the reasons behind the founding of this nation.
Our school has a richly diverse student population in terms of language, culture, and academic performance.
Students in my class speak a wide variety of languages including Vietnamese, Spanish, Chinese, Kosraean, Tagalog, and Somali. Though with many economic challenges, my students have bright futures because of the education and characters they are developing. Without your concern and action, many academic opportunities would not be available to these hardworking students.
My Project
Fifth grade is a time for delving into the history and founding of this great nation. For my students (who think that 20 years ago is hard to imagine!) it is difficult to visualize what life was like over 200 years ago. With candle-making supplies and ink, students will create artifacts used during Colonial America. This activity will open up discussions about the lifestyle and challenges that Colonists faced leading up to the American Revolution. For many students, especially English Language Learners, tangible artifacts are an invaluable connection to the past.
The other materials will be used to enrich our math activities. The wooden cubes are another example of tangible materials making understanding of concepts such as volume more concrete.
We are excited to see this project funded as it will bring us closer to stepping back in time to Colonial America.
Once students have been to the past, they will be more ready to face and shape this country's future.
