My students need a class set of "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. McCarty's classroom raised $493
This project is fully funded
My Students
The 11th graders that will benefit from your donations are intelligent and diverse young adults. Each of them has worked incredibly hard to be a part of the academic elite of Philadelphia, despite facing many limitations in resources and supplies.
These students come from all different backgrounds, both across Philadelphia and across the world, and it is important to me to foster that diversity in the literature I teach.
The look on their faces when they are handed a new book, a rare treat in their lives, evokes a feeling that I hope you have the pleasure of experiencing through our pictures and thank you notes upon receiving your donation.
My Project
The book "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown gives students a perspective seldom explored in the classroom, as it is told through the voices of the many tribes who were forced from their homes and stripped of their culture.
Promoting cultural competency and celebrating diversity in the classroom is something that is non-negotiable in a school with over 60 languages spoken.
Exploring texts like this really hits home for my students, as many of them are new immigrants or first generation Americans. Understanding how gentrification works is still very relevant today, especially in a city like Philadelphia.
The resources you provide will not only allow them to explore a new side of American Literature, but it will also help them get a deeper understanding of US History.
