Colonial Day Fair

My students need wax, wicks, scents, coloring and melting pots for dipping candles. They need yarn and craft sticks for weaving. They need button, hoops and dowels to play colonial games. They need containers and marbles to make butter.

Go Back in Time without leaving school. I teach 5th grade in a high poverty area of Utah.

Many of my students have never left the small community in which they live. They know of no other way of life. The 5th grade teachers at my school would like to help our students learn about how people lived during Colonial times and help them appreciate what they have now even if it isn't very much.

We would like to have a Colonial Day fair for our students. We would teach them how to weave using yarn and a homemade loom and dip their own candles. The students will learn how to play games using buttons, hoops and sticks. We will also teach them some of the dances from the past. We are also going to combine Science with Social Studies and have the students make their own butter and rootbeer to illustrate a change in matter. My team and I believe that the students will learn new skills and appreciate what they have while having fun at the same time. For us it is a field trip within the school.
