Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Spanish teacher in New York City. I teach 5 classes each day consisting of 34 students per class. That is a total of 170 students. Most students receive free lunch and this is a high need school.

Technology is very important for my students and for my teaching lessons. Our school has limited computer usage and many computers do not work so students do not have access to the Internet. In addition, language lab course is a requirement in all colleges. Our school does not have a language lab and I want students to be exposed to a language lab during their High School years. My goal is to begin one that will focus on listening skills through the use of internet and different software.

Having a notebook will help students become familiar with culture, allow them to take online tests, and do research just the way it is done in college. Most importantly, it can allow me to begin setting a language lab that my students can utilize before entering college. My students can be prepared for college by doing PowerPoint presentations which is an important requirement in college. They will be able to save their presentations using their external drive. Many of my students don’t have the resources at home or at school. Students will benefit by listening to audio books and be able to use multiple headphones by using the USB hub to increase their listening skills.

You will make it possible for my students to have better access to technology and access to audio, culture and many Internet possibilities and opportunities. Is is beneficial for today's student to have these resources before entering college. Setting a language lab can improve their listening skills which is so important when taking the Spanish Regents and for college lab courses.
