Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is one of three dual language (Spanish/English) classrooms at our school. Our program is very new. We only have kindergarten and first grade offering dual language instruction. Our school is trying to prepare our students to be college ready in an international world.
These dual language kindergarten students come from many different backgrounds.
Some students' families speak Spanish at home. Others only speak English at home so they are experiencing Spanish for the first time at school. Over 65% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Some have never experienced pre-school or formal daycare. They are so happy to be beginning school, many for the first time.
My Project
Our students' classroom has a Banana Slug theme. In order to teach our kids about colleges, I have shared the schools that I attended during my college career and I have decided to teach them about a university outside of our state. The University of California - Santa Cruz has many programs to offer and they have a very unique mascot: The Banana Slug. As a result, our classroom uses the banana slug as our own classroom mascot. We use the banana slug on our reading graphs and classroom posters. He is an astronaut trying to reach the sky to show the importance of reading. Two mountain climbing slugs represent our students reading with a partner. If our students had UCSC Banana Slug t-shirts, we would wear them every Friday to teach others about our reading efforts and raise their awareness about attending college after high school.
Teaching children about the importance and availability of college after high school empowers them.
Many of our students will be the first in their family to attend college. It is imperative that we encourage all students to consider college. We must make sure that all students know they can afford to go to college if they choose to pursue higher education after high school.
