This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from an area of the highest poverty. Because of this, my school has limited resources for teachers in the classroom. SAT prep is a luxury in this community. Students are not familiar with organizations such as Kaplan and Princeton Review. Because of this, these kids are at a disadvantage when competing for a spot at a highly accredited university. I am trying to work to close that gap.
College is a hard process to navigate as it is; imagine also feeling like you cannot afford proper preparation for college entrance exams?
This hardship and stress is real to my students. It is a time in their lives where they need to focus on more deadlines than they are used to and complete more writing than is their norm. This process stresses them out, and on top of that they must continue to do well in all their classes.
My Project
The CollegeBoard is an excellent resource we use for college prep constantly at my school. It offers most things our kids need to succeed, including SAT prep books. These books help students break down the test and understand what they are really testing and how to approach challenging questions.
These kids are the first generation in their family to even think about applying to college, and I want to be sure they are prepared for that process.
With these books, we would use them to help strengthen their test taking skills as well as reading, writing, and math. The more practice these students are able to have, the higher their scores will be able to go. It will be important for my students to use these books with me in class as well as be able to take them with them outside of class. If they are taking the books home, they have endless opportunities to study and improve their scores, so they are able to apply to their dream schools.
