College Here We Come!

"College here we come!" I teach juniors and seniors who are taking rigorous college prep classes in order to achieve their dream of making it to college. Many of them do not come from a background of academic success or from support networks that have guided and mentored them towards a college education.

My students say, "Many in society or our peer group or even our family may not believe it, but we are going to college! We are the AVID junior and senior class at a suburban Oklahoma high school. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and we are determined to succeed in life and become responsible citizens in our community by pursuing our college dreams. While our school supports us with staffing and some materials, we don't have the opportunity to purchase supplementary books, especially those that are inspirational and demonstrate how other students like us have made it. We want to learn how they did it so we can make it and more importantly, so we can show others behind us how to get it done as well."

"We found a book while searching the Internet for college resources. It is called, 'First in the Family...' and it shares the obstacles and successes of some students from around the country who were the first in their family to ever make it to college. This book is a great compilation of stories and our teacher has shared some of them with us, but we want to turn the pages of the book ourselves so we can see their experiences in our own lives."

My students don't have many positive role models or examples of success in their lives. They have a tendency to feel like they are the only ones who have had to fight to make it or who have had to deal with adversity. I need them to see what is possible and what can happen if their dream is bigger than their list of excuses. By reading this book together, my students can see that college is a worthy and realistic goal. Think about the examples in your own life and how they helped you see what was possible for your future, maybe even before you saw it yourself. By funding this grant, you will make it possible for these students to catch a vision that can lift not only themselves, but their families, siblings, friends and even communities. Your investment will be immeasurable and I thank you for your consideration.
