This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Of the 27 students sitting in my classroom, reading levels range from 2nd grade to 12th grade. But, I am a teacher of 9th grade Earth Science. I work in an urban environment with 90% of our students receiving free lunch. As teachers, our job is to "meet the needs of our students," but often the majority of our efforts fall on the students with skill deficits and behavior problems. We structure our classroom to meet those needs. Sadly, I'm no exception.
As the science department chair I want to set a better example of how to meet the needs of all of my students. Currently, when advanced students finish their work early, they either help other students, start their homework or tackle a "challenge problem." While all three of these activities are worthwhile and help them to solidify what they have learned, they do not add depth to their understanding. It does not advance their own learning of Earth.
The "Exploring Geology" text is set up as 2-page illustrated discussions on different topics in geology. It covers much of the same content as our curriculum, but at a higher level. It will serve as an additional resource for the advanced students, and will help to increase their understanding of topics that we must skim over in class. BEST OF ALL it will show them what a real college textbook looks like! They will learn how to read it! They'll practice taking notes "college" style and summarizing what they have read! They will begin to become familiar with the type of work that will be required of them when they leave our safe haven and venture out into the collegiate world!!!
I ask you to help empower my students to seriously consider college by giving them the skills and confidence they need to believe they can succeed. Your donation of textbooks will help give students tangible skills they will need to survive college. Your donation will help make it possible for me to reach everyone in my classroom. Thanks!
