Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is an AVID elementary and we serve a community where homelessness, poverty and gang violence is rampant. My scholars come from homes where their parents are illiterate or are too busy working to spend time with their children. At the beginning of the school year, each classroom selects a university. Each scholar knows their university. When teachers pick up their students after lunch or recess, the often call them by the university. For example, "UC Santa Cruz line up" and the scholars respond. This week we had college week and we had all sorts of activities for the students. We had dress for success day, and career day. On one of the days, we asked the scholars to wear college t-shirts.
A 2nd grader who comes from a single parent household had cut out the word "College," and taped it to his shirt, he wore it proudly all day.
This then motivated me to go buy a shirt that reflected his classroom university. I asked his classroom teacher to raffle it off. To my surprise, the student who had inspired me, won the shirt! He was ecstatic and put it on immediately, with tag and all.
My Project
We constantly remind the scholars that the possibilities are endless and that they can achieve their wildest dreams. We recently hosted a college t-shirt day, many of the students unfortunately did not participate as they cannot afford college t-shirts. Many of them used their creativity and created signs that they taped to their regular t-shirts.
The daily challenges my students face will not stop them from attending college.
This was evident on college t-shirt day where kids had drawn college names and mascots and wore them proudly during the event. They were so proud of their shirts. They posed for pictures, told any adult that would walk by to look at their college t-shirt.
I did my own mini raffle with one shirt in a classroom. The students were excited and were thinking positive thoughts to win the t-shirt. When one got selected, the rest were happy but also disappointed that they did not get the t-shirt. Seeing the look on their faces broke my heart and made me wish I had more college t-shirts for my scholars. I had the idea that we could raffle off college t-shirts to scholars who are being safe, respectful and responsible. I hope I can reach the 50 scholars by planting a small seed of hope using the college t-shirts.
