My Students
It is a challenging job for teachers to teach Advanced Placement courses. It is doubly challenging if workbooks and study materials are not readily available for the students. My students need all the help they can get in order to pass the AP Statistics examination in May 2011.
Against all odds, our school is the beacon of light in this notorious neighborhood of this city.
The students are not only achieving but they are slowly developing into leaders in their own respective communities. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students themselves together with the teachers, administrators and staff who constantly push them to achieve higher. The school population is composed of 98 percent African American and Latinos and majority are high needs students. Sometimes students come to us and tell their sad stories and that they feel safe inside the building than outside. Everyone in the building work hard to educate these young men and women but this is only half of the battle. The real challenge is sustaining the interest of these scholars while instilling the values and skills they need to succeed in life.
My Project
While other students are struggling with their required mathematics classes, our scholars are taking one step further ahead: taking Advanced Placement courses. AP Statistics is only one of the eight AP courses offered in our school. Considering the budget situation and other financial considerations, our school can not afford to buy expensive books and review materials for the AP students. Having taught AP Statistics in the last 2 years, my biggest challenge is to translate the computational and conceptual knowledge of the students to answer the questions in the AP examinations. Thus we need all the resources we can get in order to simulate or replicate the test so that the students get valuable information and experience with the AP-type questions. The purpose of this project is to help the students prepare and review for the test by having in front of them varied sources of data and test-ready materials.
The workbooks that we asked for in this project will surely help the students review for the AP Statistics examination in May of 2011.
If they will pass the test then they will save precious money in terms of tuition for the said college course - Statistics. Passing the examination likewise, will boost their morale and make them gain more confidence in getting a college degree. Your donation will surely help our students in their pursuit of excellence. Thanks!
