My students need 20 Chromebooks equipped with GoogleDrive and other GoogleApps to use for collaborative writing, peer review, revision and reflective blogging.
Do you care about supporting the arts and tech-literacy at the same time? Chromebooks will allow us to approach writing as an artform as we use GoogleDocs to work collaboratively on our academic writing. We will also use Blogger to blog about our own writing process.
I teach at an arts integration public high school in Pa.
Students from all over the city audition in one of five art focus areas. We focus on 6 habits of mind--imagination, Communication, Empathy, Perspective, Analysis, and Commitment--and in our academic content classes, we strive to integrate the arts in every lesson and every unit. Our students often commute for 45 minutes by public transportation for the chance at honing their artistic craft in our academic-rich school culture. Although our students are dedicated to their studies, they often lack the technological resources to engage in project-based inquiry at the level they are capable of.
My Project
How will these Chromebooks make a difference? They will give students the opportunity to imagine, design and publish their writing while expanding on the their prior knowledge and comfort level with online collaboration. Students will use GoogleDrive documents to generating ideas and drafting of their academic papers. Especially important will be the use of the Comment function in GoogleDrive documents. Working in carefully selected Writing Groups, students will comment and provide feedback right on their peer's draft in real time. Additionally, students will use Blogger to reflect in writing on the texts we read, as well as reflect on each part of the writing process.
Do you think young adults should be able to use Google for more than searching for the link to the latest social media website?
By contributing to this project, you are helping to ensure that students learn to use technology to generate ideas, constructively evaluate the writing/communication of others, and to reflect on their process. Finally, students can use GoogleDrive to take their work with them after they graduate, including the feedback they received.
