Budget cuts hurt rigor and creativity in the classroom! Our public high school focuses on a college prep arts integration curriculum for a group of inner city students in a district where kids are not often given the opportunity to learn in an academically challenging environment. Their learning centers on ICEPAC--Imagination, Creativity, Empathy, Perspective, Analysis and Communication--but we frequently don't have the varieties of materials necessary for engaging in a deep and multifaceted focus on Literature as Art. In my classroom, students work to become experts in 21st Century literacy and communication, as well as in how Classic literature informs, shapes and contrasts to modern American life. These working class art students often ask 'what if,' 'why' and 'how,' and having multiple resources, at home and in class, allows them to test their hypotheses within various modes, forms and narratives.
