Collaborative Work Generates Ideas

My students need easel pads during collaborative research to demonstrate content knowledge. Students use the white boards to work thru difficult concepts. The microphone will project my voice over the loud air conditioner.

My Students

Each class begins with content, student-led discussions in the context of every-day life decisions. "It's raining today, therefore I will need to use an umbrella. If I don't use an umbrella, then I will get wet." These simple conversations lend to the understanding of conditional programming.

Our school has a growing population of culturally diverse students and beginning language learners.

One third of our student population receives free or reduced price lunch and breakfast.

Our school was renovated several years ago, and an additional high school was built in a different location in the city to serve the growing school population, which fluctuates between 2,000 and 2,500 students in each high school. The high schools offer a large range of foundation, extension, honor, and advanced placement courses and CTE programs.

Students do not comprehend content knowledge at the same rate or level. Students who struggle in some subjects find programming more familiar and push themselves to be successful. My classroom is an engaging atmosphere for all levels of students.

My Project

Students in my class do collaborative projects to generate ideas and build content knowledge. Students write their final work on easel paper which is shared with the class on the walls.

Collaboration adds to each student's individual content knowledge.

Students listen to each other explain difficult computer science principles and benefit from many "aha" moments. It is rewarding, as a teacher, to hear students challenge and compliment each other and build new friendships.

The computer desks are positioned to foster pair work. The collaborative class work fosters a better environment to build student pairs, naturally, avoiding unproductive partnerships.

Students use the white board to work out complex ideas and I use the multiple colors to group simple ideas for complex algorithms.

The microphone will project my voice thru the LCD speakers over the loud sound of the air conditioner in the ceiling in the back of the room.
