Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All of my students have struggled to succeed in traditional high schools. Many of my students are gang affiliated, young parents, struggling with their own or their family members’ mental health, or suffering from poverty with 87.76% qualifying for free/reduced lunch. In addition, over 80% have been or currently are classified as English learners. However, these are not the things that I see every day.

I see students who are overcoming serious obstacles, who are making efforts to learn and to grow in spite of overwhelming odds, and who are caring about each other and helping each other.

I see students feeling a sense of accomplishment when they succeed in understanding something they have struggled with for years, and I see their parents light up with pride when I tell them of their child’s success. Because of our smaller alternative setting, I am able to build relationships with these students in ways that are often difficult in a traditional setting. I am dedicated to creating educational experiences which will help them succeed in high school, college, career, citizenship, and life.

My Project

Currently, one thing that has significant impact on my students is the physical space in which they work which hinders collaboration. Desks are isolating, even when they are set next to each other. Many tables are too big, keeping students up to 5 feet away from each other. Research in mathematics, ESL instruction, and trauma informed practices all show that building relationships through academically focused conversations helps these groups of students succeed. I need 6 trapezoidal tables to create the space for these.

Implementing collaborative, inquiry-based learning experiences for students requires that they communicate, and these tables that I am requesting would enable me use various configurations to create adaptive learning environments quickly.

They are large enough for students to be able to create posters or other presentations for their solutions and justifications while still small enough for them to communicate. This would maximize the benefits of these interactions to make students more prepared for college and career.
