Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Every day, I get to wake up and teach the best students in the world! My students are amazing. They are smart, inquisitive, honest, and are constantly overcoming challenges.

I teach in a low-income community school where students are labeled "at-risk" and are expected to be failures.

I disagree with the idea of my hard-working, self motivated students being labeled because they have ALL the potential to achieve. Everyday I tell them they can accomplish ANYTHING they set their hearts to! While our school is composed of wonderful educators and students, we unfortunately lack the necessary technology required to adequately compete with students in more affluent areas. The majority of my students do not have access to computers at home. The only place they can develop technology skills is at school. The focus of our classroom is collaboration, cooperative thinking, and project-based learning. From the moment you enter our class, you will experience students being held responsible for their learning. They work in small groups where they are constantly tasked with face to face interactions.

My Project

Students are assigned group projects/assignments regularly. They work together to research, organize, write and present their work. The classroom laptop will also be used to allow collaborative work and research. This will help keep group work fun and interesting while at the same time helping them learn research and presentation skills. This equipment will play an important part of improving students' education and technology skills. These activities provide students with a higher degree of engagement and higher-level thinking, both of which are critical to the common core focus. When students are engaged, they work together towards a common goal. This is why project-based learning helps to bring them together, define roles, complete a task, and disseminate to classmates, parents, and the world. This laptop will provide ongoing opportunities for students to develop projects they are interested in pursuing.

I'm preparing my 7th/8th graders to succeed not only in middle school, but in their futures.

In order to be prepared and be able to compete with their peers, they would benefit from the use of technology in their learning. Becoming comfortable using laptops will help them a great deal in their education. Most of them don't have these resources at home, so I want to provide them with whatever I can at school. Your support is greatly needed and appreciated.
