Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students have constantly been told they are unable to complete high-level tasks simply due to their demographics and situations. Eventually, they believe it themselves. Students need teachers who believe in them enough to make available the opportunities to problem-solve, to defend their own individual thoughts, to be accountable to themselves and to others, to do more than just be hand-fed information to be recalled later.

I want for my students these "collaboration stations" to make history more alive and meaningful to them because history was made more personal for them by involving them.

They would have to consider every choice and thought and opinion and base them solely from factual evidence. They would have to learn that their are multiple points of view to the same event as well as multiple interpretations of an event, place, or person, which means they would learn to debate in civil manners, make compromises, and/or realize neither person or group will change their opinion but still choose to remain civil and respectful in spite of differing opinions. Their self-worth and self-esteem are continually increased as they are enabled to share their own ideas and thoughts and be included in a team where each member has a task.

Trying to group old-style elementary desks and chairs doesn't work for this generation. Early-learning grades have new tables and chairs for group work, but intermediate and middle school classrooms seem to always be given the "leftovers". If collaborative classrooms are truly desired, collaborative furniture is a great necessity in order to make this happen. These "collaboration stations" (tables and chairs)will help make history and social studies more memorable instead of a class to dread. Thank you.
