At many schools, kids are watching the clock and wishing the time would pass by even faster. The final bell of the day may even include kids running to leave as quickly as possible, but not at our school. After all classes end, the school is still bustling with the enjoyment of learning. Kids are in CruClub with College Crusade, with the robotics team preparing for competition, receiving extra help on homework with teachers, in STEM teams with Providence After School Alliance, but most of all, kids are staying after school for sports teams!
Our teachers love coming to work every day and the students reciprocate that feeling.
We boast the highest middle school attendance rate in the district at 94%! We joke that even after school ends, the kids won't go home. But really, they just love the opportunities that WBMS provides them with.
My Project
When I think back to when I was a child in school, I remember desks in rows and silent classrooms. I would listen and look at the teacher then struggle to understand on my own after his or her instruction. But research shows that children learn best from communicating, collaborating and problem solving with one another.
The classroom setup is essential to having these collaborative learning experiences work for students!
We will use the three flower tables for students to work with one another on problem solving and performance tasks in math, as well as activities and experiments in science. The horseshoe table will be used for small group instruction that is differentiated to meet each of the students needs.
The red tables and black chairs match our red and black warrior mascot here at West Broadway Middle School. So not only are we building a culture of learning with one another, we are also building a sense of pride and family in our little Providence middle school!
