This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Have you ever needed a designated area where you can collaborate with other students on a project? The media center is a place where true collaboration can take place. Creating an environment for this activity is paramount to student success within the school.
Our public high school serves approximately 1900 students.
These students come from a large military community with a variety of different cultural experiences and backgrounds. Many come from economically disadvantaged homes and will attend several different schools before completing high school. Despite these challenges, our students are actively engaged learners who thrive in a stimulating learning environment.
My Project
Our library is currently undergoing drastic updates. Many of the pieces of furniture have been in the library for well over twenty years, and students avoid these areas that are supposed to attract students.
We would like to purchase two new chairs that we will use to create a collaboration station where students can come to collaborate with the media specialists, other students, or other teachers. We would eventually like to add additional seating options designated for collaboration, but this funding would allow us to replace the old pieces that we have now.
It can be very difficult to encourage high school students to use 21st century skills in a collaborative environment.
By improving the look of the library and adding more collaborative seating options, we hope to make our library a more desirable place for students to visit when completing these types of class projects.
