Help me give my students the opportunity to collaborate and solve problems using the Building Thinking Classrooms model. This model encourages students to work in small groups while standing up and draw their strategies for math problem solving.
Collaboration is an important life skill! My third graders are learning how to work together in small groups to solve some hard math problems. Currently, the students stand at a laminated white sheet of paper and discuss the strategies they will use. However, in order for each group to really engage in this activity, they need adequate supplies. The upright white board, pens and erasers set up each group with materials that can be used for years to come.
Kids learn from each other and problem solve together!
These materials are universal and can be used for any subject but are especially useful in math problem solving. Standing at a white board and writing out math problems is a proven skill that is supported by Building Thinking Classroooms by Peter Liljedahl. He recommends 14 practices and one is standing while working. Another is making random groups and learning how to communicate clearly when solving problems.
These materials will be very helpful with small group problem solving and can be used for many classes in the future!
