I am responsible for creating the first computer lab in the history of the Rand Technology Campus of Community Academy Public Charter School. The lab will serve students ranging from early childhood to eighth grade. It is very important to me, as the Instructional Technology Coordinator, that there is a space in the lab that allows for collaboration and the use of various manipulatives. While I think there are numerous benefits to the computer and Internet access, I think that verbal collaboration and physical construction are also key elements for learners of all ages. Our children are like sponges, and the younger students definitely need to be able to touch and feel beyond the keyboard and mouse, because that is how they naturally learn. The older children can also benefit in the same ways. Collaboration space in the computer lab will allow teachers to bring groups together to explain the lesson, or allow students to share their findings. Although a techie at heart, I recognize not everyone learns in the same way. This space will also allow students to pull away from the computer to gather their thoughts, build a model, or create a poster. To create this space, I am requesting a rectangular conference table and six chairs. Thank you for your consideration of this proposal.
