Collaboration in AP Psychology!

My students need 8 Chromebooks to access technology in our AP Psychology class. This would allow students to collaborate with students in and out of the classroom.

My Students

I want my psychology students to have access to all the incredible resources available outside of our classroom: psychological databases, collaboration with psychology students across the country, and the ability to create meaningful projects that demonstrate their immense knowledge of psychology.

I teach at a selective-enrollment high school on the south side of Chicago.

This is a special school with hard-working and curious students almost all of which are college-bound. Approximately 80% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-lunches, and 98% of our students are African-American or Latino. "Our mission is to empower students to become independent thinkers in a collaborative learning environment. We will nurture each student contribution to local and global communities by promoting personal responsibility, service, and intellectual and social growth." My students live up to this mission each and everyday- working together, learning from one another, and growing as scholars and thoughtful and caring human beings. Because we have 100 minutes together twice a week, we are lucky enough have the time for in-depth discussion, inquiry, and problem-solving where both the students and I feel challenged to consider other perspectives.

My Project

A few years after implementing an honors and AP Psychology class, the program has continued to grow. Students have loved exploring the thoughts and actions of themselves, their families, and their friends through a psychological lens. Using these chrome books, students will have the opportunity to work on public service announcements to inform the community about mental health issues and to spread awareness and understanding of various psychological disorders, particularly in low-income communities where mental health resources continue to be cut. Students will also have the opportunity to collaboratively create presentations to teach their classmates about issues that they become expert in. These topics will range from social psychology, adolescent development, motivation & emotion, personality, and intelligence. Lastly, I would love to connect with psych students from across the country and learn from one another by creating projects that will include students from all over.

These chrome books would help my students in so many ways.

They will continue to become experts on technology before they embark on their college adventures, but more importantly, these laptops allow the walls of my classroom to dissipate. Technology can broaden their audience and make each of their assignments more meaningful and authentic as their work can be shared with our local community, city, and country.
