Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are sixth graders who deserve the best of the best when it comes to teachers. They are dynamic and need support beyond just the academics. During this onset of early adolescent change, our students start to develop more independence and individuality. This is a vulnerable time for our students as they are socially insecure and strive for answers. At this time in their lives, teasing, exclusion, bullying, and rumoring become more common. This is a crucial time in their lives and guidance is essential.

My students come from all walks of life, bring many cultures to our classroom, and enrich our community with their experiences and family history.

Despite the challenges they face in their daily home lives, my students show great perseverance and drive.

If they are given a task to complete, they work together diligently in order to accomplish their goals. My students have a deep desire to learn, and no matter what they are dealing with at home, they put it aside when they are in the classroom and focus on bettering their future.

My Project

Research shows that children learn best from communicating, collaborating and problem solving with one another. The classroom setup is essential to having these collaborative learning experiences work for students! The flower table will allow students to lean in, and collaborate more effectively on reading and writing assignments.

Facing each other in proximity will encourage discussions at the flower table that will facilitate engagement, better listening and accountable talk between all students.

We will use the flower table for students to collaborate with one another on book journals, writing assignments and performance tasks. The new chairs will make students more comfortable. Our students have outgrown the older wooden chairs intended for smaller children. This new configuration will be a visual symbol of the norms and routines that this type of work that will require. The "round" table makes it clear each person is valued and heard.
