Collaboration is a necessary part of learning! It is important for students to be able to share ideas and to work together to create a product of their work. In order to do this, the classroom needs to be well supplied.
Our school is a public exam school in a large urban district.
We stand apart from other schools both within and outside of the city because our students must take 4 years of Latin beginning in 7th grade until the 10th grade. For most of my 10th grade students, Latin 3 will be their final year of Latin. This is the year is when they put all of the skills they have been learning, studying, and practicing to the task of reading authentic Latin from important Roman authors. Once they have translated the Latin into English they face the tasks of showing how well they have understood the text and of relating it to modern literature, culture, and experiences. The students are motivated and eager to show their skills and talents. Unfortunately due to budgetary constraints our school has limited access to many supplies which would enhance the students' learning and creativity.
My Project
Students will work collaboratively on posters where they can show their progress and comprehension of a topic they were just instructed on. Students will be put into groups and each given a different color marker. They will sign their names at the bottom of the poster with their marker. This way everyone is responsible for contributing to the poster. The posters can be a place where students can analyze one topic in depth or various connected topics. Students can use the posters to participate in a "jigsaw" activity in which they study and practice one topic in depth and then re-group to teach the rest of the class about their topic. I foresee students creating helpful charts for classroom use. These posters will be reused as often as possible. I plan to cover them with scrap paper each time students use them. If they would like to save their work for future reference, they can take a picture of it and upload it to our class site on Edmodo or onto an online portfolio.
These poster supplies will help my students be 21st century learners using 20th century materials!
They will use their critical thinking and collaboration skills to show their progress and their comprehension of the many readings and topics they will be tackling this year. Students will benefit from my ability to differentiate my lessons: assigning different tasks to groups and students according to their readiness level, interests, and talents.
