Collaborating at the Keyboard

My Students

Last year I had my 1st grade keyboard students work in pairs to evaluate one another playing the keyboard and it instantly turned our classroom into a very dynamic learning environment. When reflecting at the end of the school year, students cited this experience as one of their favorites.

I teach in a K-5 public elementary school with a diverse population of about 1300 students.

My students are generally of low socio-economic status immigrant families from all corners of the globe. The ability to participate in a music ensemble, to play an instrument, or sing, is a unique opportunity for many of these students. We feel that music is an important part of their education and understand that their musical experience goes beyond holding an instrument and making a sound, it actually helps their brains to develop into better readers, writers, and thinkers. Learning to read and play music is like learning a new language in a uniquely physical way. I feel like I can literally see students' brains rewiring themselves as they learn to use the correct finger to play each note in the music.

My Project

“Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success.” - Author Unknown My students need 10 sets of headphones and headphone splitters in order to learn to play keyboard with a partner. Your donation will enhance our classroom experience by allowing students to freely collaborate with one another at the keyboard. When they evaluate each other's playing, they learn to become better pianists themselves. We will also be able to do more collaborative projects, like composing, and students who are struggling can be paired with a strong partner. The value of these opportunities to foster teamwork is priceless. Having these headphones and splitters will also increase flexibility as far as the number of keyboards in the room and allow us to have more space for movement, games and performances. These are all activities that my students clamor for. Little do they know how much valuable learning is packed into these endeavors!

Last year I compared reading test scores of those students who had studied piano with those who had not.

In nearly every category, the students who had learned to play piano scored higher. This is tangible evidence of what I see every day. Music makes a difference in a multitude of ways and can alter a child's life trajectory for the better.
