My Students

Everything I needed to learn, I learned in Kindergarten. I never really understood how true that really is until recently. Kindergarten is the learning foundation, the building block for all learning. ABC's & 123's start the learning!

I teach at a school where children are haunted every day by the terrors of their past, be it Hurricane Katrina of 2005 or the crime and turmoil they see and hear every day.

Our students are fighters. They work hard to achieve goals that others may think are too much for them, they strive to do the right things in life and to be the change our society needs. This year, I'm teaching Kindergarten. The children in kindergarten this year are the babies that were born just after Hurricane Katrina. They are fresh, eager minds. Most of what they've seen in their short lives so far is turmoil and devastation; It's my job to make them accomplished learners! As an added challenge, due to the size of our school building, we have had to move our entire school, for the second summer in a row. We now have a much larger, more safe, inviting school for our students.

My Project

Our classroom is large, very large! It is on the first floor of the school, at ground level, therefore the floors are cold! In Kindergarten, my students spend a big part of their day on that cold floor. We currently have carpets in a few of the spaces where they'll spend the most time but due to the moving and changing of classrooms, we had to share our carpets with other teachers leaving us with centers with no rugs. The three rugs we are requesting are small enough to work in our center spaces, but big enough to accommodate all of the students that would be sharing the space. We would like these carpets for our dramatic play center, our math center and our magnetic center.

Have you ever tried to do something new, or learning something new while you're uncomfortable?

In Kindergarten, my students learn something new every day! With your help, we can help them be as comfortable as possible in order to give them more and more time to worry more about their learning and less about where they are sitting. Please help us find a comfy place to sit!
