Cold Storage: Mini-Fridge for Biology Samples

My Students

Whether it is environmental justice, epidemiology, animal behavior, or genetic engineering, my biology students are naturally curious and interested to know how science applies to their daily lives. Many of them want to go into STEM fields in the future, and hands-on laboratory experiences give them both practical skills and experience using the scientific method. Labs are the student's favorite part of the class and allow students with a wide variety of skills and experiences to participate and be scientists.

Over 60% of the students come from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds and spent the entire 2020-2021 school year learning remotely.

My Project

I returned from distance learning this fall to find that our old refrigerator had finally died.

We regularly need to keep lab materials and samples refrigerated in biology, both to prolong their usage and to explore experimental variables.

Several of the biotechnology activities I do in the spring depend on DNA samples staying cold until they are used. Petri dishes are less likely to become contaminated when they are refrigerated, and seeds are less likely to sprout prematurely or be eaten by critters.

This mini-fridge will allow my students and me to keep our materials under the necessary conditions. They are simply too essential and expensive not to care for properly.
