I work with a Title I school in an urban environment. All students receive free and reduced price lunch. The school operates on a tight budget and has little to no funding for art supplies.
My students are bright, inquisitive and excited to learn.
However, due to a lack of resources, the school does not have the budget to allow me to purchase supplies. The students love art. For this project, select grade level students will learn and explore the art, practice and handwork through basket making. The students range from 4th graders to 8th graders.
My students need coiled basket materials for a special art project. Basket making is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation among cultures and is still popular today. Coiled baskets with distinctive designs are synonymous with the Southwestern American Indian tribes. Students will learn about the stories told in this artwork, which will carry over to the art project. These skilled practitioners have raised basket coiling to a classic art form. Coiling is a flexible medium that presents exciting art. Students will use the requested materials to create baskets to be displayed in the school lobby and art local exhibits.
My goal is for each of them to leave my class loving art, with lifelong skills.
Art experiences help students across the curriculum, and increase cognitive skills. Many of my students have not had art class before and I want to encourage intrinsic learning. To do all of this, they need to be able to experience art, art history, and artists.
