My Project
Every Friday, my Spanish heritage speakers take part in "Viernes de Charles" (in English, known as "Coffee Talk Fridays"). Students engage in off-the-cuff debates about topics more typical for a social science class, such as school uniforms, the importance of being bilingual, and alternate forms of grading students. I give students hot cocoa and let them have a student-led conversation.
With whiteboards and hot cocoa, students can enjoy a more informal environment where they can develop critical thinking and public speaking and engage and get under challenging dialogues.
The boards will allow the students to jot down key ideas from their peers and formulate them in a quick-flowing discussion. Students genuinely enjoy Viernes de Charles, as they look forward to a treat and a seminar-style class.
