Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 20 students that I have the pleasure of working with have vastly diverse needs. These awesome kids have a wide range of cognitive, physical and speech delays, which make their day-to-day learning more of a struggle. What benefits them most, is providing activities that incorporate all their sensory needs. Being involved in vocational learning opportunities help the students to learn lifelong skills. We are a Chicago public school and thus funding is limited, but the needs are limitless.

My Project

Life skills training is one of the most valuable skills for my students. My students are 6, 7, and 8th graders who have moderate/severe cognitive, physical and speech disabilities. They learn best when skills are taught with hands on lessons, in real life settings. Being that the school system we are in does not offer opportunities to teach my students in community based settings, I have to create new ways to teach valuable skills within the school setting. Having the opportunity to run our own classroom coffee cart, and giving the kids the chance to run it, would teach many skills that will go far into their future. They will be in charge and will be able to communicate with groups of adults and students in ways they wouldn't normally get to. It will make them feel important and valued as members of our school and community, and what is more important than that?!

They will use 2 stations with the Keurigs to make the selected coffee or tea and have the chance to offer the condiments to go with it, as well as using the blender to make iced coffee frappes.

All important skills in teaching communication, choice making and management of materials. The cart will be used to deliver their coffee or tea throughout the building because of the many physical disabilities the students have. To make the coffee cart business our very own, the students will design their own aprons to wear during the vocational education time. All the skills that will be taught during this time are skills that are essential for their future and to increase their level of independence. We are all very excited to get our business going.
