Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a 3-5 grade special education class with a wide variety of abilities. My students have different disabilities such as Autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and Angelman syndrome. Half of my students are English Language learners, speaking primarily Spanish in the home. We are a self contained class, which means the students are with me all day, and mainstream for extracurricular activities (PE, music, garden, dance etc.). They are an amazing group of little students who have different backgrounds, but when we all come together we are one big classroom community.
My Project
This year I started a Friday Coffee Cart in my special education classroom. It has been amazing to watch my students strengthen these life and social skills, and step into the role of little baristas.
Our Friday Coffee Cart has been such a wonderful addition to the school community, but we need more supplies to keep it up and running each week.
We have a Keurig machine, and I have different students make the coffee each week, and then other students are the delivery boys and girls. We only have a few barista aprons, but it would be fun to have the whole class wear them so they feel apart of a team. We need a variety of different coffee selections so that the teachers are happy customers!
We also need flexible seating for those students who need to take a break when they get overstimulated during this activity. Sometimes it can be too many things going on at once, and a student may need to take a break on a beanbag, or get their jitters out on a wobble stool.
