Coffee Cart Project for Students with Autism

My Project

Help me provide a structured, meaningful learning experience that targets language development, pre-academic skills, and social skills through hands-on participation in a student-run coffee cart. The materials needed for this project include TPT gift cards that will provide visuals and learning materials for teaching coffee cart operations. Other materials are targeted for coffee cart supplies!

Educational Benefits of student run coffee cart!

Language Development

-Functional communication: Students practice requesting items, greeting staff, answering questions, and using appropriate scripts.

-Expanding vocabulary: Exposure to words related to drinks, supplies, money, sizes, temperatures, etc.

-Speech/language goals: SLPs can embed target phrases or articulation practice into naturalistic interactions.

Pre-Academic Skills

-Sequencing & routines: Students follow multi-step directions (e.g., “Get the cup, add cocoa, then stir.”)

-Matching and sorting: Use visuals to match names with drinks or sort supplies.

-Basic math skills: Identify coins, count items, or make change in a simplified way.

-Reading & writing: Recognize sight words on menus, take simple orders, fill out checklists.

Social Skills

-Turn-taking: Practice taking turns while serving or preparing drinks.

-Perspective-taking: Understanding and responding to others' preferences or reactions.

-Initiating interaction: Greeting customers, asking “What would you like?”, or saying “Thank you.”

-Self-advocacy: Choosing roles or asking for help when unsure.

Independence & Confidence

-Provides students with a sense of responsibility and purpose in the school community.

-Builds routine tolerance and task persistence over time.

-Promotes generalization of skills from therapy/classroom to real-world settings.

Staff & Peer Involvement

-Coffee cart days provide a natural opportunity for general education peers and school staff to interact with students in the program in a positive, respectful way—building empathy and inclusion school-wide.
